It is the main access to the fascinating medieval village of Campofilone. Characterized by an elegant pointed arch and a Ghibelline battlement, the gate was restored and partially modified in the 18th century. Originally, it was a true defensive tower with a drawbridge, a room for armaments, and loopholes from which boiling water or oil was thrown at enemies. On the external facade stands out the heraldic coat of arms of the village and a lamb, symbolizing the church’s protection. Recently restored and enhanced by the suggestive avenue of century-old pines that precedes it, it now represents the identity symbol of Campofilone, welcoming visitors and travelers with its timeless charm.
The historic centre of Campofilone stands on a hill overlooking the Aso Valley. If arriving by car, take the A14 motorway, exit at Pedaso and continue towards Campofilone following local signs.
The nearest railway station is Pedaso, on the Adriatic railway line. From there, Campofilone can be reached by local transport connections or by taxi.
To visit the historic centre, it is advisable to leave the car in parking areas near the entrance to the village and continue on foot. The main access is through Porta Marina, along Via Vittorio Alfieri. During busier periods, check local signs and any access or parking restrictions.
The Civic Library "Romolo Spezioli", located in the monumental Palazzo degli Studi designed by Girolamo Rainaldi, is one of the most prestigious archives in Europe. Its beating heart is the majestic Hall of the Globe (1688), which houses the original core of civic knowledge and the famous terrestrial globe by Silvestro Amanzio Maroncelli from 1713.
Thin and golden egg pasta, the Maccheroncini di Campofilone IGP tells a centuries-old tradition made of manual gestures, simple ingredients, and peasant wisdom. A Marche excellence celebrated every summer in the heart of the village.
The Abbey Church of San Bartolomeo, rebuilt in the second half of the 19th century, stands out for its Greek cross layout and the richness of its interiors. The frescoes by the painter Fontana, along with the marble decorations and the figures of saints created by his student Nicola Achilli, make it a small treasure of sacred art.
