Corso Castel San Giorgio

The Old Country, corresponding to the current corso Castel San Giorgio, represents the original nucleus of the ancient village and the city port, where the Adriatic Sea once reached. Characterized by three pointed arches that marked the landing area for boats, the site today offers a charming walk along the castle walls that leads to the Merlata Tower or Turrimagna.

Description

The area historically known as the Old Country, located in the current corso Castel San Giorgio, constituted the heart of the original structure of Porto San Giorgio. In the past, the geographical layout was profoundly different, as the waters of the Adriatic Sea reached directly to this point, making it the nerve center of port activities. The ancient port was delimited at both ends by three characteristic pointed arches, which marked the exact place where boats docked for the unloading of goods and passengers.

Today, this area retains the charm of its historical function and serves as a starting point for a tourist itinerary of great scenic value. From here, it is indeed possible to take a walk along the perimeter of the castle walls, a route that allows one to admire the ancient defensive wall until reaching the Merlata Tower, also known as Turrimagna, an architectural symbol of the fishing village.
