The parish church of Santa Maria and San Ciriaco represents the spiritual and artistic hub of Altidona, safeguarding a legacy that has its roots in the ancient settlement of vicolo Santa Maria. The current structure is the result of a profound transformation that occurred in the 18th century when the parish title was transferred to the pre-existing church of San Michele, which was entirely renovated according to the strict standards of neoclassical style. The exterior is characterized by the imposing profile of the bell tower erected in 1886, designed by the architect Giovanni Battista Alesi.
Crossing the threshold, the single-nave interior reveals an artistic layering of exceptional value. On the right side, the 18th-century devotion is expressed in the canvases by Natale and Ubaldo Ricci, with special mention of the Madonna of Loreto surrounded by a host of saints beloved by local tradition. The heart of the presbytery holds the most ancient treasure: a polyptych from 1390 signed by Cristoforo Cortese, where the serene fixity of the Madonna with Child is softened by the liveliness of the side saints. No less significant is the altarpiece by Vincenzo Pagani, which stages a visual dialogue between the Virgin on the throne, Saint Matthew, and a warrior-armed Saint Michael the Archangel. The heritage is completed by a polychrome wooden Madonna of Mercy from the 16th century, a rare silver embossed processional cross, and the monumental organ in the counter-facade, created by the master Giuseppe Grelli.
Altidona si trova in provincia di Fermo, tra il borgo storico collinare e la zona costiera di Marina di Altidona. È raggiungibile in auto dall’autostrada A14 uscendo a Pedaso e proseguendo poi sulla SS16 Adriatica in direzione Marina di Altidona; da qui si sale verso il centro storico seguendo le indicazioni per Altidona lungo la strada provinciale.
La stazione ferroviaria più vicina è quella di Pedaso, servita dai collegamenti regionali sulla linea Adriatica. Dalla stazione è possibile raggiungere Marina di Altidona e il borgo di Altidona in pochi minuti con taxi, autobus locale o auto.
Per visitare il centro storico di Altidona si consiglia di lasciare l’auto nelle aree di sosta situate all’ingresso del borgo o nelle immediate vicinanze del centro, proseguendo poi a piedi tra le vie del paese. Per chi invece vuole raggiungere la zona mare, sono presenti aree di parcheggio a Marina di Altidona, in particolare nei pressi della SS16, di Via A. Gramsci e degli accessi alla spiaggia. Durante l’estate o in occasione di eventi è consigliabile verificare la segnaletica locale e le eventuali limitazioni temporanee alla sosta.
The Porta da Sole is one of the ancient entrances to the castle of Altidona (13th-14th century). Initially called Porta da Capo, it later took its current name due to its southern exposure.
The Duomo of Fermo is astonishing for the contrast between its Romanesque-Gothic facade from 1227 and its Neoclassical interior from 1781. The adjacent Diocesan Museum displays the precious Treasure of the Cathedral, including the Chasuble of St. Thomas Becket (1116) and the Missal De Firmonibus (1436).
