Palio del Mare (Traditional Maritime Competition)

On 4 July, the Palio del Mare brings the five districts of the Faleriense area together for a spectacular celebration along the southern seafront of Porto Sant’Elpidio. Colourful floats, choreographed performances, vibrant decorations and a thrilling final relay race transform the event into a lively summer carnival by the sea.

Description

Palio del Mare is one of Porto Sant’Elpidio’s most popular and colourful events. It brings together the five districts of the Faleriense area, whose residents parade through the streets with themed floats, costumes and choreographed performances. The districts compete under the symbols of the Dolphins, Sharks, Mermaids, Seahorses and Whales.

The festival culminates in a relay race that determines the winner of the coveted Palio. In the weeks leading up to the event, homes and streets are decorated with the colours of the five districts, creating a vibrant and festive atmosphere throughout the neighbourhood.

In recent years, the event has expanded to involve other districts of Porto Sant’Elpidio, which are paired with the southern neighbourhoods taking part in the competition.

Often described as a summer carnival by the sea, the Palio del Mare attracts thousands of residents and visitors each year, becoming one of the most anticipated events of the summer season.
